Every day I read the paper or listen to news I see examples of the enormous abuse of mainstream humanity by individuals or corporations for personal gains and profits.
Today, an editorial in the Free Press by Tom Maerten (http://mankatofreepress.cnhi.newsmemory.com/…) summarizes the extensive control and influence of the pharmaceutical industry (Big Pharma) on politicians and government officials, with support of the president, and on doctors and medical organizations, all for the purpose of making as many of us dependent on their drugs for life at the highest costs possible. This, unfortunately, is legal under the current codes of ethics and operations of our country’s economic system.
In the same edition, an article describes the disparities of health coverage for low income people, especially those on Medical Assistance and MinnCare. The article cites Mankato Clinic as being one of nine clinics in the state for providing higher than average care to the underserved. I find it sad and telling that we have to laud the few medical institutions that treat the underserved more equally with the privileged, when in reality they are simply doing what the medical ethical code and human morality dictate.
